Restraint
training planned for all mental health nurses
April
24, 2004
The
government has unveiled plans to train all mental nurses in England
in the restraint of violent patients.
The
plans come in the wake of the inquiry into the death of psychiatric
patient David Bennett which criticised NHS mental health services.
The
National Institute for Mental Health in England revealed it was
launching a scheme to train all nurses to a recognised standard
by 2005.
NursingTimes.net
reported that the announcement was made at a national conference
on violence in health care hosted by the Nursing Midwifery Council
in Liverpool.
Gary
O'Hare, from the institute, said the scheme would be rolled out
across the country next year following a series of pilot schemes.
'There is an inconsistency in the training and quality for staff
at the moment and a need for mandatory training,' he said.
