am an experienced Midlands-based editor and journalist, contributing
news and features to the Guardian, Sunday Telegraph, Independent

Times, Woman's Own, Community Care, The Big Issue in the North,
and trade magazines.
I cover all

Award-winning:
I was awarded Mind Journalist of the Year 2001 for my coverage of
mental health issues.
"Spying
on the psychiatrists", a profile of a clinical psychologist
in Guardian Society and "Highs and lows" on a teacher
who for 30 years managed manic depression in The Times Education
Supplement received particular acclaim.
Judges praised
my "in depth knowledge" and said I had "that rarest
of gifts for conveying the most complex issues through the lives
and words of real people".
Production:
I have co-ordinated and managed full
editorial production for Jobs4Nurses, a bi-monthly newspaper for
nurses. I was also founding editor of the Dewsbury Post, a monthly
regional newspaper. I established and managed a team of seven journalists,
photographers and subeditors.
Web editor:
I am founding and managing editor of psychminded.co.uk,
an online resource for professionals working in mental health. I
have a familiarity with all aspects of web publishing.
Media/public
relations: The Manchester offices of the public relations
firm Staniforth Ltd have called me up to work on a marketing campaign
for their client, the North West Development Agency, a body responsible
for the sustainable economic development and regeneration of the
north west.
I also act as
a Press Consultant for the national charity Guidestar
UK
Whether
it be producing press releases, case studies, or features; or handling
media relations, strategic planning or media training I have that
all important inside knowledge of the media industry.
Subediting:
I subedit for a national newspaper based in the north west. I have
all the skills of a first class sub editor.
News editor:
I am news editor for OpenMind magazine,
published by Mind, a leading mental health charity.
Author:
I am the author of 'Raising
Our Voices', an account of the Hearing Voices Network, a mental
health service user-led initiative challenging dominant understandings
and treatment of people diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Manuscript
editing: I copy edit manuscripts for authors and writers,
ensuring 100% accuracy in grammar and spelling. The copy-editing
process also involves advice on writing style, and flagging up inconsistencies,
contradictions and factual concerns.
Trainer:
I have acted as freelance trainer with
the London-based Media
Diversity Institute which organises workshops for journalists
in areas of conflict. Most recently I have co-run a three day workshop
in Nagorno-Karabakh, the enclave bordering Armenia and Azerbaijan.
